What is meditation?

Of all the meditation questions we get asked, this is one of the most
common. Meditation is both a technique and an experience. It's a
technique for going deep - to relax you at a whole different level. And it's
an experience that can change your life.

Meditation allows you to connect with your true essence, while breaking
away from the constant onslaught of thoughts, concerns, obligations,
and frustrations that occupy your consciousness throughout a large part
of the day. Meditation is the process of quietly going within to
release the mental chatter... to free you of its burden... and to energize
your body, mind and spirit.

How do you get started with meditation?

First, find a quiet, private place where you can remain undisturbed for
15 to 20 minutes. That's all it takes, though you may want to extend
your sessions as you gain experience and proficiency.

Next, find a comfortable chair, and sit up straight. Don't slouch or
sink into the sofa. You want to remain relaxed, but awake. Begin a series
of deep, slow breaths, inhaling lots of oxygen and slowly releasing
exhaling at a nice comfortable pace. As you exhale, let go of whatever
thoughts pop into your mind.

This is challenging for most at first, but with practice, it does get
easier -- much easier. Whenever you notice another thought, simply let
it go and turn your focus towards your breath.

What benefit does meditation offer?

The ability to deeply relax at will is a huge benefit in itself in
today's fast-paced world. Being able to unwind and free yourself from the
'noise' of daily life helps to strengthen your immune system, while
shoring up your emotional well-being too. For some people, the act of
meditation helps to facilitate healing.

Meditation gives you energy. It makes you feel lighter and more capable
as you mentally unload the weight from your shoulders. It's like
taking a well deserved break that nourishes you. It's a pause that both
refreshes and rejuvenates.

Another benefit often mentioned in meditation questions and answers
sessions is the increased clarity meditation delivers. Suddenly, what was
once a mass of confusion and indecision becomes crystal clear. Now you
can focus with 100% of your attention on what's most important, whereas
before you were only contributing a tiny percentage of your effort
towards the same.

Meditation provides relief from stress and tension. It's the ultimate
tool for attaining peace of mind -- whenever you choose.

I tried meditating once and it didn't work for me - why?

Everyone experiences meditation in a different way. If you tried it and
didn't get any benefit from your experience, chances are, you never
reached a deep enough level of relaxation. You might have followed the
right process and then hit a detour as various thoughts crept into your
consciousness. In this case, a guided meditation CD would help because
you're directed every step of the way.

Regular meditation makes each session a more powerful and beneficial
experience. It takes some getting used to, but do it often enough and
you'll never want to give it up. Meditation changes lives. It just keeps
getting better and better as you connect on deeper levels. Keep at it on
one day you'll discover that the experience of meditation has truly
transformed you.

How can thinking about "nothing" help to improve my concentration?

Most of us are busy at work... busy at home... and busy with a thousand
and one different things. "Multitasking" has become a necessity for
many working people these days. But in reality, it's a hugely ineffective
process. When you're working on or thinking about numerous different
things at once, your focus is scattered. You can't possibly give 100% to
any one task or thought.

Meditation questions established routines; it challenges you look at
things in a different way. Meditation allows you freedom. It releases you
from the shackles of overwhelming thoughts, concerns, issues, and
tasks. While in the moment of meditation -- nothing else matters. You
simply allow yourself to rise about the noise and enjoy the freedom of daily
thoughts - many of which are counter-productive.

During meditation, is one aware of what's going on at all times?

Yes. You are awake and aware (though deeply relaxed) at all times. In
fact, you direct your own meditation. Even when you're guided, you still
control the imagery and shape it to serve you best.

In meditation, you attain a deeply relaxing state of bliss. It's heaven
on earth for those who engage in meditation regularly.

But some people are hesitant to give meditation a try because they like
to be in total control of their lives. The mere suggestion of 'letting
go' can be intimidating to those people. But the irony is that the
more you surrender and let go of that which occupies your consciousness,
the more control you gain in your life.

You gain a new sense of clarity. You now know what to focus on to get
you the results you seek.

Can I meditate to achieve my goals?

Typically, meditation involves freeing the mind of all thoughts - and
that includes, thoughts of goals or objectives. A fundamental purpose of
meditation is to free the mind in order to reach a blissful state of
inner peace and harmony.

Creative visualization is a form of meditation. Visualization involves
a meditation-like relaxation process as the first step in the process.
Once a deep level of relaxation is reached, creative visualization can
then be used to produce any specific result you want to attain from
boosting your self confidence to improving your reading speed.
